[series]: The Boondocks (cartoon)
[character]: Gin Rummy
[character history / background]: Rummy's background is never extensively explored in canon. All we know about his background is that he served in the Iraq war with Ed, and both were in Special Ops. Ed was discharged at the start of the season, and Rummy came home some time later.
In the first episode he appeared in, Ed came over to Rummy’s house and introduced him to Huey and Riley Freeman, two young kids who had recently moved to Woodcrest with their grandfather, Robert. They enlisted Rummy’s help to catch a murderer known as The Xbox Killer, which Rummy was all too eager to help with. While Ed and Rummy went on a rampage through the neighborhood where the crime took place, Huey and Riley found the killer’s identity and where he was living. While driving to the killer’s apartment, Ed and Rummy decided to stop and get drinks at a convenience store first. When neither of them wanted to pay for their beer right away, they tried to rob the place, which led to a shootout between them and the store owners. Despite their actions, Ed and Rummy were hailed as heroes by the public, mostly due to their status as war veterans and because the store owners were Arab. The Xbox killer had been apprehended some time after they started the robbery, having killed once more. Had Ed and Rummy not stopped for drinks, they could have caught the killer and prevented the second murder.
A few episodes later, Ed, Rummy, and Riley saw a news report about Oprah Winfrey coming to Woodcrest for a book signing and show taping for a couple of days, giving Rummy the idea to kidnap her. Their first attempt saw them going into the wrong bookstore and taking Maya Angelou, whom they released after realizing their mistake. The next day, they went to the studio where Oprah would be taping her show so they could try and kidnap her again. Thanks to Rummy’s bad directions, they wound up breaking into Bill Cosbey’s dressing room instead. As Riley stormed off in frustration, Ed and Rummy decided to cut their losses and kidnap Cosbey instead. However, Cosbey annoyed them so much that they returned him fifteen minutes later.
Their next major appearance on the show had them breaking into people’s houses and robbing them at night. While being chased by the neighborhood watch with a gun one night, the two stole Robert’s car. A few nights later, they broke into another house (which just happened to be the Freemans’) where they were caught by a shotgun-wielding Robert. When questioned on why the two were robbing people, Rummy explained that Ed’s grandfather had put them up to the task so people would want to buy his security systems and make him even more money. The next morning, Robert turned them in to the neighborhood watch and police, but the two were released on account of being white (the watch was certain that black people had been committing the crime). Ed and Rummy ended up having the last laugh when they stole Riley’s bike and rode off on it.
Rummy didn't appear for a while after that incident, only showing up again very briefly when Ed Wuncler hired him to kill a kickball referee for refusing to take bribes from him. A few episodes later, Robert came to see him about getting rid of the community’s new gardener, Lando, who claimed to be Robert’s long lost son. Rummy suggested he go on a talk show and get a free DNA test done to see if Lando truly was Robert’s son. When the test came back positive, Robert returned to Rummy to once again ask him to send Lando far away. Rummy, however, suggested Robert should either get to know Lando or else Rummy could just kill him, thinking the latter was the better option. Robert managed to talk Rummy into sparing Lando and Rummy left Robert to his own devices for the rest of the episode.
In their final episode, Ed and Rummy were hired by Ed’s grandfather once more. This time, he ordered them to plant a bomb in one of his buildings in order to kill a rude and stupid security guard and profit off his death in the wake of a supposed terrorist attack. However, Ed dropped his iPhone (which contained everything about their operation), and it fell into the hands of the FBI. Ed and Rummy were apprehended by agent Jack Flowers, but once again, Ed Wuncler I’s connections forced the FBI to let them off the hook.
[character abilities]: Rummy is very capable of killing someone, as shown when he kills a man by strangling him, throwing him off a bridge, and then force-feeding him amphetamine. He can be stealthy when he wants to be. He is also athletic and can perform combat dodges. He is strong enough to carry a grown man fireman’s style.
[character personality]: Rummy, for all intents and purposes, is a wigger (a white person who acts like a stereotypical black gangster). Between him and Ed, Rummy is the smarter of the two, which isn't saying much. Rummy believes himself to be very smart and a criminal mastermind, even though he is actually quite dumb and doesn't plan things out very well. When making plans, he often doesn't take all possibilities into consideration. When he encounters a slip up in a plan, he refers to it as an "unknown unknown" (things we don't know we don't know, according to Rummy) and refuses to admit his mistake. He can be arrogant and stubborn, especially if he screws up. Rummy is also unwilling to accept the fact that the only reason he and Ed never get arrested is because Ed's grandfather owns everything in town, including the police. Though he's a criminal, he still considers himself a patriot and is even willing help bring in other criminals sometimes. Even though he is usually calmer than Ed, Rummy is still a trigger-happy psycho. He always has at least one gun on him when he steps out; he keeps a few in his house, and doesn't hesitate to bring them out. He also believes that the best way to remove someone from your life forever is to kill them, as opposed to just taking them far away. The main reason Rummy breaks the law is because he considers it enjoyable and it gives him and Ed something to do.
Rummy often criticizes the latest pieces of communications technology, such as texting, bluetooth, and iPhones, believing them to be impractical and mere fads. However, he is not a complete technophobe, since he does carry and use a cell phone, and once scene has him telling Ed why a two-way pager differs from a computer. Rummy refers to any technology he doesn't approve of as "nigga technology". He often gets into debates about the usefulness of such technology with Ed. Despite being sometimes psychotic and homicidal, Rummy does have a soft side, usually when it comes to Ed. The two have a genuine friendship, sharing credit for their crimes and making up after having arguments. Rummy is also rather clean-cut, especially when compared to Ed, dressing nicely and having a nicely-kept house.
[point in timeline you're picking your character from]: Near the end of their last episode, after getting knocked out and arrested by Jack Flowers.

[Accidental video]
Where the fuck am I? Ed, where the fuck are ya’?
[He takes a look around, then murmurs] This sure as hell ain’t Woodcrest.
[He puts a hand to his head, slipping his fingers under his glasses to rub his eyes]
Shit, the fuck did I drink last night? [Takes his hand from his face and looks up, this time speaking louder] Ed, if dumping me here is yer idea of a joke, it ain’t funny!
[Finally notices the device] The fuck is this? [Examines it, narrowing his eyes at the screen] Great, just my luck, nigga technology.

(sample 1)
Rummy did not regret coming home from Iraq early. Sure, he would have liked to have kept fighting for America and show his patriotism, but home had started calling him after Ed had been sent back. Call it homesickness, call it wanting to be around his best friend, call it whatever you want. Rummy was back in his nice house in Woodcrest, and could hang out with Ed whenever he wanted.
It also seemed that Woodcrest had gotten some new residents while Ed and Rummy were in Iraq, that of Robert Freeman and his grandsons, Huey and Riley. Rummy liked Riley; the kid was just as big a troublemaker as Ed and Rummy and liked coming along on their crime sprees. Not to mention it was nice having a lookout. The blonde just wished the kid wasn’t so quick to point out flaws in Rummy’s plans or tell him how much of a screw up he was. Robert was pretty cool for an old guy, especially since he didn’t mind his grandson hanging out with criminals. As for Huey, Rummy didn’t have much of an opinion of him, since he didn’t usually get involved unless he was trying to make sure his brother stayed out of trouble.
If there was one man whom Rummy would call his best friend, it was Ed Wuncler III, and vice versa. Rummy had been with Ed in Iraq and was now his partner in crime. The blonde man was convinced his 'brilliant plans' were the sole reason neither of them had been to jail. Even when Riley said Gin was a bad planner and not as smart as he thought he was, Ed would always say otherwise. It was one of many reasons Rummy liked the heir so much, even if he was a little too into nigga technology. Rummy and the heir had a tight friendship, and he wouldn’t give Ed up for anything in the world.
Speaking of the redheaded heir, Rummy was bored, and there was only one thing he did when he was bored. Time to take a spin to the Wuncler mansion and share with Ed some of his latest plans.
(Sample 2)
Rummy's life had been anything but boring, to say the least. Iraq had been one hell of a time, getting shot at and looking for weapons of mass destruction. No, they didn't find said weapons, but that didn't mean they didn't exist at all. The blonde might have even kept up the search for them if it hadn't been for Ed Wuncler III being sent home. As much as he wanted to serve his country, a big part of him missed his friend too much to stay overseas. A year ago, he would have just stayed and kept fighting the good fight, but he and the heir had grown close as they fought together side-by-side, and the idea of fighting just wasn't as appealing if Ed was not there. Ed was his only real friend.
Once they were both back home, and no longer directly serving their country or getting shot at, they had just started doing what they loved. Namely hanging out and committing crime. Just because Rummy was a patriot did not mean he wasn’t allowed to enjoy breaking the law. He was a criminal mastermind, and breaking the law was what he did best. The blonde had been pleasantly surprised to find out that off the battlefield, Ed had a mean and violent streak in him too and also felt entitled to go around doing whatever the hell he wanted. Plus, Ed didn’t get so scared that he shit his pants when they were just enjoying a good crime spree. It had never failed to frustrate Rummy whenever the smell of Ed’s shit would give away their position while out on patrol in Iraq. Not to mention that no matter how many times they failed, like the time they’d tried to kidnap Oprah, at least he had Ed to make him feel better. Even though he did what he did for fun most of the time, getting paid for it was nice too. His opinion on Ed’s grandfather, Ed I, wasn’t a high one in terms of personality, but at least he paid them in big bucks. Big bucks went a long way in getting new suits. If nothing else, Rummy wanted to show everyone that he and Ed were a force to be reckoned with. So far they’d had minimal success, but they weren’t ones to give up that easily.
